Indoor service in restaurants is prohibited, gyms and movie theatres are closed and public gatherings can be no larger than 10 people indoors or 25 people outdoors. The measures will be in place for 28 days to stem a surge in COVID-19 cases.
Other locales that slid back include Toronto, Ottawa and Peel, and businesses in those places are suffering from the blow to their bottom line.
Mackie said outbreak of more than 200 cases linked to Spinco, a Hamilton fitness facility, was a factor in his decision.
“You also have many smaller outbreaks coming from restaurants,” he said.
Ward 2 Coun. Shawn Lewis said the changes would have to be surgically precise and clear for the public to understand.
“I’m especially concerned about our restaurant sector,” he said. “There is no way around this: A second shutdown of restaurants will mean the end of them; they will never reopen.”
